For the rest of us…

Hi everyone!

While James is heading down South to go to Melbourne, I’m not. So what that means is that I have a fortnight to get awesome at TF2, play with the wiki, and generally just live.

One of the biggest things you’ll see over this weekend is a new WordPress theme for this blog. We’re a bit sick of the discontinuity shown in the styles we have lying around, so we’re going to install a new theme which follows a bit closer to the WikiForAll styles.

I’ll also be updating core software that runs the site and writing in some new behaviour for the front page of WikiForAll. If all goes well, you won’t know anything’s different.

All that means if things look different or act differently I’m in the middle of making changes and it’ll be fixed within 24-48 hours.

James will not be away from internet down in Melbourne (he’d die) so he’ll also be updating the site semi-regularly over the next fortnight. With any luck that means I don’t have to make stuff up 🙂

On my way to melbourne!

Well, my bags are all packed, my boarding pass is printed, my santa hat is in its holster, and i’m ready to fly out to melbourne tomorrow afternoon. I’ll be landing at 4pm, and will be staying a fortnight. Theres not going to be any (well, much) tf2 down there, so instead of my schedule looking like this:

A pie graph of the usage of my time

It will look something more like this:

A projection of the expected usages of my time while in melbourne.

Which, for those unaware, means I will probably be doing a lot more on the website while in a foreign city. Ironic, I know, but TF2 is srs business.

In other news, i’ve made 66% on the stock market so far this year, so with some work and some luck, i’m hoping to have made 150% by the end of the year. It sounds like a big number, but once you realise you’re compounding from 166% rather than 100% , its actually less than I made in the first half of the year. I got lucky once or twice during the first half of the year.

I’ve also started learning C++ in a NOT-HALF-ASSED sort of way, I did a whole bunch of cleaning up on the wiki, and i’m toying with the idea of hooking up with an artist and starting a story comic ala www.erfworld.com, but I want an idea first before I get anybody TOO excited.

See you on tha flipside brudda!

I LOVE EVERYBODY!

Well, i may not have started the evening with any ideas, but a few hours later and i’ve got three new pages of comics up, starting here, with news that the semester has unofficially ended! It actually ends in three weeks time, but i’ve only got one exam in those three weeks so I think I can fairly safely say that i’ll have some spare time over the next while. In that spare time who knows what I might do.

Only time will tell for sure, but so far I’m certain that me and matthew will be working on a half-life 2 balanced-deathmatch mod for half life 2. The original half-life 2 deathmatch had the potential to be a great game, placed squarely between unreal tournament and counter-strike on the fully-hectic to slow-paced scale of multiplayer FPS games. The main problem with it, however, was that valve sort of pushed it out in the most tacked on way imaginable. The game was simply half life 2! The only difference is that its lots of players killing eachother, the maps are closed, and the weapons respawn. They hadn’t made any balance modifications to the weaponry, which meant that encountering somebody with a rocket launcher or an smg grenade was simply not survivable unless you both had a magnum and were a very good shot with it. So what we’re doing is tweaking it all so that the game will be an enjoyable experience for new players and old, with less “OMFG CAMPER” moments. Somewhere in our naive little game developer hearts we hope that after we’re finished the valve-mobile will pull up to our doorstep and take us away to work in the best game studio on earth, but for now we’ll be satisfied if we can just get a few people playing it and enjoying it.

More news with more progress!

We Got Game!

Hi everyone!

Just letting you all know, we’ve finally ironed out the last couple of problems we were having with our game servers, so it’s safe to advertise them now!

We run a Team Fortress 2 dedicated server at 202.63.42.160:27001, and a Synergy (Half-Life 2 Mod) dedicated server at 202.63.42.160:27000. We’re planning on extending this in the future to also have a Left 4 Dead dedicated server running.

Feel free to use them as much as you want. The TF2 server has a standard map rotation, plus “cp_follower”. It’s used semi-regularly for clan practice, so if you can’t get in because you need a password, you might have to come back later.

Enjoy!

Birthdays!

WikiForAll first went live on the 30th of October 2007. Since then, it’s changed a lot – we have a blog, comics, and a lot more content.

And it’s already May 2009. We won’t the cliched question “Where did the year go?”, but rather “Where’d the past year and a half go?”. So this time, we’re actually going to be organised for WikiForAll’s second birthday. It’ll be a celebration of all the good and bad times the site’s been through. It’ll also be a time where we release some huge changes to the site.

Watch this space for more information as the year goes on!
