Our Comics… Quality or Quantity? We give you neither!

Well, it’s Tuesday night, 11:40 PM, and I’m  blogging.

Anyways, I think it should be mentioned that this month’s comic shows several things about our resident artist aka James. I happen to notice he recently blogged talking about doing an arty subject. I must say, considering the latest comic, it’s for the best.

Back on topic now…

Firstly, the comic does actually have the important information that makes it “ours” – our site in the bottom right corner under the 4th (5th?) panel.

I feel that the question this comic begs is, was James trying for a new abstract art competition, had he had far too many energy drinks, or has he lost his trusty Corel Draw with it’s automatic circles and fill?

Unless the point of the entire comic was to totally point out how blessed we really are to get coloured, antialiased (and frankly, quite shiny :P) comics. Which I can imagine James doing.

However, now that that’s off my chest… James will back me up when I say the real reason this month’s comic is relatively awful is because the previous month’s comic was awesome enough to make up for at least two months.

For those unlucky enough to have missed out, here is the awesome comic:

Awesome comic

Awesome comic

And here is this month’s comic:

Not so awesome

Not so awesome

And now I’ve had my midnight rant. <3

Wow. Just…wow.

So, i’m right into the thick of university now, and two of my subjects can only be described as brain poison. The first is called “special topic 1”, which apparently means “teaching nerds to draw”, because its the artiest subject i’ve done in my life, and i’m doing a COMPUTER GAMES PROGRAMMING COURSE.

CAN I HAVE A “WTF!?”?

The second subject, also brain poison, is called “industry insights”, which is more or less an exercise in putting up with bureaucracy. Our first practical was the class looking for jobs online. Touché.

Other than that, i’m making the programming and games design subjects my bitches, so i don’t have much to complain about other than the work. As for my inactivity on the site lately, lets just say that one day my autobiography is going to be a very, very interesting read. But until then, you are unlikely to be told why that is, if you don’t already know. But I should be back in action for real in a few weeks.

I’m going to melbourne at the middle of the year, to meet three of my favorite internet randoms all at once, so if you’re in the area and want to spend a day at a gaming lounge with us all on the 31st of June, we’d love to have you.

The chat logs and out of context pages have been reliably expanding regardless of my laziness, so be sure to check them out every now and then.

See you when I see you!

WikiForAll's First Social Experiment!

by Matthew on March 3, 2009 at 6:08 pm

Ladies and gentlemen,

We present to you the first ever WikiForAll social experiement. We decided we wanted to know what’d happen if everyone was given full access to a forum (not adminstrator access, merely the same as any old moderator). So we thought “Why not?” and made a forum where every user – including those who haven’t registered – have full access to all the forum features.

You can get yourself in on the unrestricted forum right here: http://www.wikiforall.net/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=33. We highly suggest you take care because we’re certainly not moderating anything there (defeats the purpose).

Go ahead, knock yourselves out by fiddling with the forum, and by all means, have fun!

– Matthew

EDIT: Also, we now have an IRC server – wikiforall.net (ports 6665-6669, take your pick). Feel free to join and say hello. Keep in mind that there are actually rules in the IRC server (unlike the subforum mentioned previously)… We hope you’ll take the time to join in and encourage some conversation (how else does a relatively unpopular and unknown server become popular?).

University!

University has started for me and most of it is fairly interesting, so i’m trying to give it all i’ve got. School for me was never something i got used to. Despite the fact that i’ve spent more of my life in school than out, it was simply an inconvenience that overstayed its welcome by 11 years. When school finished, everybody else said “its going to be so weird not being in school anymore!”, whilst i said “Finally. Now things can go back to normal.”

I didn’t realise the absurdity of what i’d just said until a few days later. Back to normal?! The last time i wasn’t in school, i was four years old. Any similarities between my lifestyle then and now are things i should talk to my psychologist about (i mean, if i had one). I had always hated school with a passion that few of my peers matched. I have an abnormally low tolerance for boredom. We don’t know whether its caused by my ADD, or whether overstimulation from reacting to my low tolerance for boredom CAUSED my ADD, but one way or another, I cannot stand being unentertained. While waiting for my mum to pick me up from my traineeship once, she pulled up an hour late to find me grovelling around on the pavement observing the behavioural patterns of the common ant. Whilst in grade 12 maths B, I often found myself pulling out my facial hair (including, but not limited to, eyebrows, eyelashes, moustache hairs, chin hairs, and sideburns!) with my fingernails because that was the only thing I could do to stave off the boredom that wouldn’t get me thrown outside. Don’t get me wrong, I’m actually a very mathematically oriented person, being a programmer and all, but our teacher was boring like something else. A match made in hell.

This is the reason I never walk for exercise when I can sprint till I get hospitalised (true story. Kind of. I just passed out for a minute). This is the reason why I play every game I have in windowed mode in order to be on msn at the same time, and this is the reason I hate counter strike.

So with this… intolerance in mind, consider now living through 12 years of schooling.

Yeah, ouch.

So now I’m in university, and suddenly work is interesting, making all the reasons for my half-assed attempt at getting good marks in school have poofed out of existence simultaneously. This is more or less my excuse for not updating the life points page as I promised. Note i said excuse, not reason. Thats because the excuse is a LIE!

The real reason is the SCOUT UPDATE for team fortress 2 got released this tuesday, and I played pretty much 10 hours a day for three days getting all the unlockables and just generally enjoying the fact that all the engineers, heavies and soldiers were playing scout for a week just so I could dominate them again and again and again. If anybody here plays tf2, feel free to add me on steam, my names =FA= Shadyjames, and I look forward to playing with and against you.

Now what you’ve all been waiting for, a new comic is up! Artwork by Sam Stewart (link pending), who made my comic his bitch for a day while he drew that background. Little nuclear symbols and smiley faces by me, and damn is it hard to make them look right.

Downtime & Manpoints

by Matthew on February 22, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Hi everyone!

My sincere aplogies for this morning’s downtime. Our ISP had a Queensland-wide outage at around 8 AM (GMT+10) and unfortunately our router decided it’d be fun to handle that by resetting itself. So I’ve had to get onto my ISP to find out what’s up, and only now has the router become friendly again. So I’ve gone through and reconfigured it back the way we had it before it got wiped, and to my knowledge nothing on WikiForAll is still down. Once again, we apologies for the inconvenience.

In other news, I now have a Facebook. And that means I lose a billion man points :D. And don’t add me unless I know you, because rejection is never a nice feeling. Instead, email me at matthew@wikiforall.net or join the forums. Either way, I can see myself losing a fair bit of time in this thing, so beware all those who want me to do things “ASAP” 😛

Cheers!

Matthew
